| I have loved dogs for as long as I can remember. They've played a huge role in every part of my life. As I look back, there were times that I probably had no business even having a dog, though out of selfishness I would not give them up. These were times when my work and personal life combined in such a way that it left much too little spare time to adequately satisfy a dogs needs. Although, I have always taken my dogs with me wherever they are allowed to go, their are just times when almost anyone that has had dogs could look back and say, "yeah, I did work a lot back then... poor old fido was stuck in that apartment quite a bit", or something to the effect. This is harder on your dog when they do not have another canine that they live with. Being a textbook pack animal, they will fair far better with a buddy during those periods of limited one-on-one dog/owner time, provided that the time that is spent with your dog is quality relationship building time and provided your dog is getting plenty of exercise. Where am I going with all this? I guess I am saying that NO owner is perfect, NOR is any Dog. However, when you strive to be a better owner, you will invariably end up with a better dog(s). I think that I'm much the same dog person that I've always been, but I am now a much better dog owner that I was 15 years ago. A BRIEF HISTORY of MY EXPERIENCE with DOGS We always had dogs growing up as kids. We had a few mutts until my mom fell in love with Golden Retrievers. She raised two of them from pups. They were highly intelligent and ultra trainable dogs, a trait that I loved about them. They did however lack some appeal to me that I can not put my finger on, (at least without offending every Golden lover out there, which certainly would not be my intention). I had my own ideas of what kind of dog would better suit my taste. I bought a Boxer,(Otis) shortly out of high school after seeing a pair of them that a friend of mines parents owned. To this day - Butch, (one of the pair) remains on my list of all time favorite dogs. He wasn't a champion of any show ring, nor did he do any acting, nor was his picture featured on the front of any bag of dog food. He was just a great friend to his family as well as something else to look at. I remember him as being one of the most impressive dogs I've ever seen in person. I was slightly jealous. I wanted Butch to be my dog, so I purchased Otis in the hopes of having that same kind of companion. Otis turned out to be everything that I hoped he would be. He was our Butch. Well, to make a long story short, my parents ended up with Otis most of the time. He was a beauty of a Boxer - a very Old World and big boned beast that topped the 100 lb. marker. His temperament was superb and his likability was off the chart. My Dad called him "the King", as that is exactly the persona that he embodied. Otis was a natural guard dog, a quality that I knew had to be innately present in any dog I would have in the future. He quite definitely solidified my affection for larger, bully dogs - particular the Molosser type dogs. This type of dog spans the entire gamut of Mastiffs, as well as St. Bernards, Newfoundlands, the Great Swiss Mountain Dog, and the Boxer to name a few. |
